Install it, find it, start it.

Kioku is a menu-bar app: no window, no Dock icon. These six steps take you from the download to your first memory.

    Open the disk image and drag Kioku to Applications

    Double-click the downloaded file, drag the Kioku icon onto the Applications folder, then open Kioku from Applications. The first time, macOS confirms you want to open an app downloaded from the internet — click Open.

    Look for 記 in your menu bar

    Kioku sits at the top right of your screen, near the clock. If your menu bar is crowded, it may be tucked to the left of the other icons.

    Click the icon and choose Sign in to start recording

    Pick Continue with Apple or Continue with Google. Your browser opens for sign-in and sends you straight back. Use the same account on kiokuu.com so your Mac and the dashboard share one archive. The first-memory screen helps you make a short recording; you can skip it and choose Start Recording from the menu whenever you want.

    Allow Microphone for your first memory

    Review the voice-profile and cloud-processing disclosure, then allow Microphone. This first-memory recording uses only your microphone and needs no Screen Recording permission. Ordinary Mac capture uses Microphone and Screen Recording. For Screen Recording, turn Kioku on in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, then click the Kioku icon again. Screen access is what lets Kioku read what you saw; microphone access is what lets it hear what was said.

    Say something you want to remember

    Record a short thought about your day, a decision, or a plan. You can stop after ten seconds; the first-memory recording stops automatically at three minutes. Kioku checks your voice separately from creating the memory, so an inconclusive voice result does not mean your recording was lost. You can re-record or forget your saved voice in Settings → My voice.

    Tell everyone in the room or on the call that you keep a transcript — you must have their agreement before you record. When you choose Stop Recording, useful speech can become a memory in the dashboard after processing.

    Connect ChatGPT or Claude

    Add Kioku as a read-only connector and ask your assistant something only you would know. Connection guide →
